With the rapid development of mobile communication, properties of miniaturization, broadband and multi-frequency for antennas in application of wireless communication systems are demanded. Composed of ground plate, short circuit patch, feeding line and ground line, the Planar Inverted F Antenna (PIFA) has the features of compact size, low profile, light weight, easy to fabricate, and easy to integrate with microwave circuits, these properties meet the demands of the above systems, so the PIFA has been found widely applications. Based on the research of available PIFA references, this thesis has proposed two kinds of PIFAs with good performance in the help of electromagnetic simulation software. The novel antennas have been fabricated and tested. The experiment results are consistent with the simulation results. This proves the efficiency of the design. The main works and creative parts of this thesis are summarized as follows:1. The basic configurations and principles of PIFA are studied. The different types of PIFAs and the advantages and the disadvantages of different type PIFAs are summarized. The miniaturization, broadband and multi-band technologies of the microstrip antenna are introduced.2. The selections of the configuration parameters of broadband miniaturized antenna and multi-band miniaturized antenna are studied. The influences of the antenna configuration parameters and feeding position of the feed line on antenna performance are analyzed. The results show that the position, the size and the shape of the slot, the width and the position of the short circuit patch, the position of the feeding line all have significant effects on the antenna performance.3. Two novel broadband planar inverted E antennas are proposed and designed in the help of electromagnetic simulation software. The variations of the return loss, the current distributions and the radiation patterns of the antennas with the frequency are analyzed. The antennas are then fabricated and tested. The experimental results are consistent with the simulation results. The results show that the proposed antennas have good performance and can meet the demands of the hand-set mobile terminals.4. Two novel triple-band planar inverted F antennas are proposed and designed in the help of electromagnetic simulation software. The influences of different width of short circuit patch and different positions of feeding line on the antenna performance are analyzed. The antennas are also fabricated and tested. The experimental results are consistent with the simulation results. The results show that the proposed antennas have good performance and can be used in mobile terminals.
