Compared with the common microwave antennas, the patch antennas afford the attractive features of low profile, light weight, easiness of fabrication, conformable to mounting structures and compatible with integrated circuit technology. However, the inherent limitations, such as the achievable impedance and axial-ratio bandwidths, low pure polarization and lack of power capability etc, restrain their wide applications in many fields. In order to overcome these shortcomings and satisfy the strict requirement of the system to the antenna, many scholars have done many researches before. Antennas are indispensable elements of any wireless communication systems. Nowadays, with the development of communication technology, the demand for the antenna becomes much higher than before. This paper mostly emphasizes on how to improve the bandwidth of the antenna. Several enhancement techniques have been proposed to broaden the bandwidth of the microstrip antennas.Actually, the good matching of antennas lies in two facts. The first one is the matching between the feeding network and the radiation element; the second is the inherent matching of feeding network. If the two king of matching are fulfilled, the bandwidth performance of the antenna will be definitely fine. Three techniques are proposed to improve the bandwidth of the microwave antenna. Capacitive coupled antenna and the planar inverted-F antenna with meander line structure have been proposed to address the good matching between the feeding network and the radiation element, while the planar inverted-F antenna with differential feed thus focused on the good matching of the feeding network. Both techniques are proved to improve the bandwidth of the microwave antennas significantly.
