On the basis of in-depth analyzing the smooth handoff and the fast handoff including their issues which are the common solutions of Mobile IP, a new seamless handoff for Mobile IP optimistic solution which support MN's moving in a WAN is given. And a simulation platform for performance analysis of Mobile IP using OPNET is designed and implemented. In order to decrease the packet drop rate and the interval during the MN's moving, smooth handoff and fast handoff are introduced. Seamless handoff is one of the goals of Mobile IP expected to achieve, which contains the merits of both smooth handoff and fast handoff. In order to get the performance of seamless handoff, the key technologies include buffer management, buffer data transporting-speed controlling management based on RTT, the area management of micro-moving of MN and the router optimization solution, etc. It can avoid losing packet by adding buffer management to the AR, but burst data transporting will cause heavy congestion of the network and decrease global network performance a lot. The transporting-speed can be controlled by referring the RTT between OAR and NAR and then implement the smooth handoff. Meanwhile distributed area management strategy can resolve the single invalidated point issue effectively and complete the fast handoff solution. The simulation-models are built on OPNET v10.0 PL1 to verify the validity of the new optimistic solution for the seamless handoff of Mobile IP. The models can reflect real network entities very well. The results show that the new seamless handoff solution can resolve the problems which the packet drop rate is too high, the time interval is too long and the performance is low during the MN being moving very well. And finally, we realize mobile IP seamless handoff.
