Instant communication is one of the most popular network application. The technique can not only send instant text information, but also support multi-media information. It is applied in many realms, such as personal chat, enterprise collaboration and business communication. But, every corporation had their own protocols for Instant communication. This problem embarrassed compatibility, expansibility, security and interoperability.In order to solve it, the Internet Engineering Task Force is organizing some new groups to work out strong, safe, flexible protocols. In these ones, SIMPLE develops fleetly. And it has been recognized by many corporations, such as Microsoft. SIMPLE comes from SIP, which is fashionable nowadays. And it inherits advantages from SIP, which are simple, expansive, open and realizable. Furthermore, SIMPLE can intercommunicate with all SIP equipments which have already existed, especially intercommunicate with telecommunication net.Firstly, the paper illuminates the principium of SIP, then introduces the scopes and architecture of SIMPLE protocol. Secondly, it analyzes all kinds of protocols and drafts about SIMPLE, especially the parts branching out from SIP. And it generalizes SIMPLE as four mechanisms which are Event Notification, Event Publication, Presence and Instant Messaging, and also explains each function, expanded method and message flow of them. Thirdly, it constructs and designs layered pattern of SIMPLE protocol. Fourthly, it expands oSIP protocol stack to be a SIMPLE one, which can be used as a basic prototype of SIMPLE protocol stack. Finally, it describes the method and result of testing.
