The natural audio can always provide 3D space information which includes size and location information. The subjective sense of this space information is called 3D audio-effect. To reduce the loss of space information during recording and playback, stereophony technology was introduced. However, traditional dual-channel stereo audio can not supply excellent 3D audio-effect, especially on mobile and portable platforms. Therefore, it is necessary to research 3D audio-effect enhancement technology for mobile and portable platforms.In this paper, a novel 3D audio-effect enhancement algorithm for mobile and portable platforms is introduced. This algorithm solves two primary issues about the 3D audio-effect for mobile and potable platforms. The first issue is that the sound field of traditional dual-channel stereo audio is always in a narrow range. This algorithm repairs the sound field by extending the original dual-channel audio to 4-channel surround stereo audio. The second issue is that, because mobile and portable platforms usually employ headphone playback system, their 3D audio-effect is uncomfortable and provides a narrower sound field effect. The algorithm solves this issue by using HRTF processing and room acoustic simulation. The subject evaluation shows that this algorithm can obviously enhance 3D audio-effect for mobile and portable platform applications.Furthermore, to meet the requirements of real-time applications on mobile and portable platforms, this algorithm can also provide low complexity by proper simplification and optimization. To further reduce complexity, the porting, fix-pointing and optimization of this algorithm to ARM9 platforms are also introduced. The evaluation statistic shows that this algorithm can meet the requirements of most real-time applications on primary mobile and portable platforms.
