With the development of the information technology industry, the digital, network and intelligence are bound to the trend of digital television. It is not feasible for China to complete the overall translation of network in a short time for its large number of analog TV users. The digital television set-top-boxes make an obvious significance when translating the analog TV to digital TV.This thesis which is based on the PNX8316 system solution provided by Philips semiconductor mainly designed and developed a digital set-top-box (STB) with independent intellectual property rights which can meet the different needs of market. Different applications which can meet the needs of different area can be easily generated by configuring the functions supported and the default parameters that greatly reduced the cost and shortened the development cycle.First, combined with the development trend of digital television, the situation of digital set-top box in domestic and abroad, the working and principle this thesis analyzes the functions of the STB and the needs of market and discuss the difficulties with the main points of the PNX8316 solution. The second part of this thesis mainly design and develop the hardware of the STB to suit the needs of market, including the design of the schematic and the construction of the hardware and its simulation of the power and the amplification of the audio circuit. The third part is about the design and development of the software. In order to reduce the connection of the application layer and the base layer, we abstract the APIs of the base layer. Split the applications to different modules by its function which can help reducing the cycle of the development. The configuration of the software is also considered. After the general design of the software, we had a detail design of the sub-system like the conditional access system and electrical program guard. In the end of this part, a test about the function and the stabilization is done, and the bugs discovered during the testing are well fixed. At the end of this thesis, a summarization with next step plan and objectives are made. The advantages and scarcity of this system are listed as well.Now, this project has got the certification of the National Broadcast Development and has produced 500 for district test. By this subject, a new concept called configurable is put forward by which the STB producer can generate different applications to meet with the different markets. It plays an active roll in promoting the overall translation of the digital cable.
