| Based on three major newspapers in Guangzhou, with a time span from January 2007 to June 2007, the rhetoric characteristics of the news titles of these newspapers are studied. The language and geographic characteristics of the news titles of the newspapers in Guangzhou are analyzed with a focus on language style.The first part serves as an introduction and the current research on this subject, the motive and significance of the study are introduced; the news titles and rhetoric are defined; and the principles on collecting data, the corpus sources and research methods are explained.The second part describes the rhetoric characteristics of the news titles of newspapers in Guangzhou. On the basis of corpus collection and statistics data, the different rhetoric characteristics of the news titles are illustrated, such as the use of dialect rhetoric, rhetoric variation, and a large number of new terms and catchphrases.The third part further describes the language patterns and styles of the news titles of the newspapers in Guangzhou. It is found that there is a preference of the use of spoken language for news titles in Guangzhou, and in these news titles strong regional style is reflected and visual rhetoric for newspaper layout is often used. By the contrast of use of terminology and different news titles on same incidents between newspapers in Guangzhou with newspapers in Beijing and Shanghai, the typical styles of newspaper news titles in Guangzhou are illustrated.The fourth part introduces the formation context of the newspaper news titles, and the reasons for the characteristics and diversity of the news titles of the newspapers in Guangzhou are analyzed from different points of view on linguistics, communication, psychology and social and cultural perspective.The fifth part summarizes the findings and conclusions, and the difficulties and deficiencies of this study are also stated. |
