Sometimes there is a need to manufacture a product according to its image orpicture, particularly in the fields of advertising, molding, arts and crafts, etc. Toincrease the efficiency, shorten the circle of production, reduce the costs and makesure the products are high quality, we have to find out a process based on image of theproduct directly. Although, the current CAD/CAM integrated systems are extremelypowerful, usually they cannot tackle this problem mentioned before in a direct andeasy way. Therefore, with the help of technologies of digital image processing andCAD/CAM integration, this thesis made some research and explorations on the NCmachining based on the image of product. This thesis is combined by three main partsas follows.The first part presented some digital image processing methods, such as imageacquisition and storage, image quantization, grayscale conversion, imageenhancement in spatial domain, thresholding, contour extracting and image thinningwhere a combination of two single thinning algorithms was used. And then, moreimportant, the algorithm of point tracing vectorization based on thinning and anoptimized tracing template were introduced in detail. And also thecalligraphy simulating machining was briefly introduced at the end of this section.The second part completely described the methods and procedure of contourmachining based on vectorized characters with CAD/CAM systems, includingcharacter vectorization, graphical element sorting, contour direction identification andnumbering, contour offset processing, etc. While solving intersection points, ananalytic geometry method was used to make sure the results were both accurate andreliable, which avoided Descartes Coordinate.The third part imported the basic concept of edge table and active edge table inpolygon scan conversion algorithm in Computer Graphics to create node tables andbuild the right and left relationship of nodes on scan line. Then, monotone lists andmonotone list tables were created to complete the node tables by adding somevertexes and build the before and behind relationship of all nodes. With all of thesepreparations, the direction parallel tool path was generated by connecting all nodessomeway in the end.On the basis of many researches on technology of digital image processing andCAD/CAM integration, a software application named Art Engraver was written inVisual C++ 2003 integrating developing environment to demonstrate all the methodsand algorithms mentioned in the thesis.
