Mobile Ad hoc Network(MANET) is usually an independent network, which has very high flexibility and reliability. However, in actual applications, there may exist requirements such as one mobile node needs to communicate with nodes in the Internet, and the nodes in different MANET as well. Such requirement can not be satisfied only depends on independent MANET. The MANET, only when connected with other kind of networks such as Internet, can really perform its potential.This paper briefly introduces the research development on the interconnectivity of MANET and Internet. According to the methods of implementation, it discusses the architecture of Internet gateway (IGW), the protocol stack and their functions in detail. It also analyzes the required signaling at the interface between mobile node and IGW, including mobility management.This paper studied the key technique for effective gateway discovery scheme selection based on different communication environments. Because of the mobility of the nodes in MANET, when the mobile nodes are ready to send packets to the nodes on Internet, how to detect the nearest available IGW, and update the routing table becomes a key problem. This paper has analyzed and compared the performance when MANET using different IGW discovery schemes such as proactive, reactive scheme and hybrid scheme with AODV routing protocol. It also discussed the best scheme selection strategy.In order to make more exact evaluation for MANET, using simulation software is an effective way. We use the popular simulation software network simulator 2 (NS2) to implement the simulation scenarios. In this paper, we have analyzed the relationship between parameters such as gateway advertisement interval (GWADVI) and delivery ratio, GWADVI and end to end delay, GWADVI and system overhead. Their relationship plots have been derived. The simulation has substantiated our analyze results.
