There are great requirement for high performance and low cost image acquisition and processing systems in many aspects of industrial measure and control field, such as automatic measurement, equipment check, security monitoring, etc. Compared with CMOS image sensor, CCD image sensor has obvious advantages in sensitivity, resolution, noise suppression and technology maturity. Developed countries have got successful experience in high performance image acquisition and processing system based on CCD image sensor. However, we still know little about such system. So it is very important to obtain kernel technology and accumulate experience by researching high performance image acquisition and processing system based on CCD image sensor to meet the requirement. This paper presents the history, structure and principle, classification of CCD image sensor, and also introduces a comparison between CCD image sensor and CMOS image sensor. The large area array CCD image sensor ICX205AL of SONY is analyzed and the image acquisition and processing system is designed based on this image sensor. CYPRESS'S LC4256V CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device) and TI's MSP430F149 MCU (Micro Controller Unit) are chosen as the core processing platform of the system. Based on this CPLD, driving schedules are designed with Verilog hardware description language to control the CCD image sensor. High speed data transfer is realized by developing firmware, driving and application software of CY68013 USB manufactured by CYPRESS. As of hardware design, the modularization of circuit and the anti-interference measures are adopted. Experiments show that the system works stably and has high flexibility and scalability.
