Binjiang Daily was created during the second express reform under the Japanese Puppet Regime. It was formed by the merger of three minor ones. It accepted the financial support from the regime with a cover of a private newspaper. It was in fact, a government subsidized newspaper serving the purposes of the government. The newspaper was funded in November 1937 serving the purpose of the Japanese invasion of China. It promoted the support of legalization of Japanese occupation and prepared the "public opinion in favor of" Japanese culture and educated the people in North-Eastern China to accept Japan as allies and to live under "full harmony of Japanese paradise". Similar with most of newspapers in Harbin at that time, the daily operation and management of the newspaper was unable to discover because of missing valuable supporting information and historical evidences such as internal records or documents. From the very beginning of its publications, there was internal collision between different groups because of different political perspective, include anti Japanese occupation and anti colonialism. As a result of the collision, the paper was finally under control of Japanese completely. The noise of anti-colonialism was then soundless. Sooner, the paper was closed after the victory of Second World War.The second chapter of the thesis of covers the analysis of the Binjiang Daily newspaper. The chapter consists of three parts: the development of the war, current politics and social events. The development of the war covered both the development of civil war as well as the development of the War in Europe. In the war coverage, the newspaper showed a strong favor in Germany. It also showed its favor in government performances in both parts of current political and social events. The newspaper also showed the different view of social life in communities in Harbin. Colorful and joyful advertisements showed how local people live in Harbin during a war time. The third chapter of the paper is to examine how the paper business was running, including interviews, writing and editing. Most news, include of international and domestic news, covered by the paper were from international and domestic news agencies from the puppet Manchukuo, only local news and social news is written by the reporters of the newspaper. Different from the news reporting techniques today, there was no information related to the authors or the sources of the news. The structures of the news reporting were very much different from today's "upside down pyramid" structure. The layout of the newspaper was relatively neat. Red color was used to label some important days. Different from today's design, the styles of the headlines of the newspaper were well designed as single line headline, double line headline and multiple lines headline and showed how the design was developed. The newspaper published a large amount of pictures and cartoons covering the World War in many different ways. The conclusion of the thesis of the paper provides an over all evaluation of the paper. Different from typical evaluation of anti-revolution paper, as most researcher usually tend to label almost all papers under the Japanese regime, this thesis focus on valuable experience from the small local paper, discover the relationship between the newspaper and the local communities and even the society. The paper was not only promoting supports of the Japanese regime in North-Eastern China, but also legalizing puppet Manchukuo with favor of Japanese culture. |
