Wear is one of the major causes of machinery parts' failures. Therefore, more attention has been paid to the wear problem. One approach to analyze wear failure is to measure wear amount, however, traditional ways to measure or evaluate wear amount have some limitations, namely, they are not suitable for the complicated parts. The method based on reverse engineering to represent wear amount overcomes such shortcomings, but there are still some limitations, that is restricted by wear amount.Reverse engineering can be clear and intuitive to represent wear amount of parts. Through the pilot study of the typical mechanical parts, using reverse engineering methods reconstruct the surface morphology of worn parts, and compare with the original three-dimensional CAD model, through the analysis of the error of reverse process, it is found that the there are some advantages and limitations by using reverse engineering method to represent wear amount. The main results include: (1) The shortages of the traditional ways to measure and evaluate worn parts, and the features and the ultimate wear amount of several typical parts have been summarized; (2) On the basis of comprehensive analysis and summary of the digital of reverse engineering and multi-view point cloud alignment, etc. for different measurement ways, different path layouts for measurement and the method of multi-view point cloud alignment are presented; (3) According to the error sources of reverse engineering, the influencing factors of error and errors have been analyzed quantitatively; (4) According to the worn gear, some researches on the reconstruction error of worn parts, the effect of errors on visualization of wear amount have been done. Consequently, it is found that there is the limitation of reverse engineering method to represent wear amount; (5) The wearing of gear teeth has been predicted dynamically by using Archard's wear model.
