An ad hoc network is multi-hop wireless formedby mobile node with no infrastructure. It is quite suitable to be used in some special situation such as battlefield, disaster recovery situation etc, because it doesn't rely on any pre-established infrastructure, and can therefore be deployed rapidly. The renewed interest in Ad hoc in recent years is largely due to the development of mobile computing and wireless technology.Because of the mobility of nodes in mobile ad hoc networks, the topology of network changes frequently. In a word, the specialty of the Ad hoc network makes its routing more complex than other networks. Therefore the performance good router protocols establishes Ad hoc network is the most important question. It is also one of present main research hot spots. With multicast business growth of demand, how to support multicast routing becomes an important task in network research. Many researchers put forward a series of multicast routing protocols for Ad hoc networks, but those protocols were designed for certain applications and have their own limitations. So research of existing multicast routing protocols including analysis and improvement have been very hot issues for current Ad hoc networks, the Same is design stable and highly efficient protocols. This article has studied Ad hoc the network multicast routing protocols and the related question, prime task including the following four aspects:Firstly, the introduction of the Ad hoc network's history, features, architecture, research focus, as well as Ad hoc network applications.Secondly, the Ad hoc network routing protocols are reviewed, a brief overview of Ad hoc network routing performance evaluation criteria, Ad hoc network unicast, multicast routing protocol, as well as the classification of some typical unicast, multicast routing protocol.Thirdly, a novel core foundation scheme for mesh-based multicast routing protocol in ad hoc networks was proposed, which is called VCMP (Variable Core Multicast Routing Protocol). In VCMP, a core is not well-known and it variable to the current network topology and group membership, VCMP uses the helps of core nodes and vicinage table to reduce the control packets overhead which is serious in the ODMRP flood environment. Finally, the simulation tool GloMoSim is used to simulate our proposed protocol. The results of simulation have shown that the proposed novel protocol effectively reduces the number of control packets, enhances the protocol efficiency, and is suitable for a large-scale ad-hoc network environment.
