Video compression coding technology is developing together with internet and multimedia service;it plays an important role in the video communication service such as DTV, HDTV, visual telephone, conference telephone and multimedia, etc.This paper analyzed the state of domestic and foreign research and video coding standards, concluded and introduced the MPEG series standards and the H.264 series standards, put the main emphasis on studying the motion estimation.In this paper, FS,NTSS,DS,HEXBS,MVFAST,PMVFAST and UMHexagonS algorithms are analyzed.The advantages and disadvantages of MVFAST,PMVFAST and UMHexagonS algorithms are put forward after comparing with FS,NTSS,DS,HEXBS.Based on the research of MVFAST,PMVFAST and UMHexagonS algorithms, an improved algorithm is proposed.The improved algorithm is based on the block matching, A modified motion estimation on the distribution two template, character of the based motion vector's center excursion, one octagon sharp the other diamond sharp, are used flexibly while searching according to the image' s content and the motion' s orientation, by this way, it speeds up the block matching.The experiment shows that the improved algorithm reduces the motion estimate on time greatly,while keeping similar visual qllality,so it has great value in practice.All in ,the improved algorithm can reduce encoding time greatly with similar visual quality.
