At present, flow meters made in China are far from satisfaction both in design and innovation. To speed up the development of meters, Institute of Instrumentation of Zhejiang University once introduced expert system into the design of flow meters and completed the preliminary design of meters. However, two shortcomings exist in the system. First, the type of the topology of meters is limited, which is unfavorable for innovation; second, the reasoning process is time-consuming, and often no solution is obtained.On the basis of previous research, this paper makes a detailed study on solution to the existing technical difficulties, and gives an elaborate explanation of the development of expert system. The main innovation of this thesis is as follows.1. Graphics aided interface has been used. Users can edit the topology of meter freely according to their needs, which realizes the diversity of topology. In addition, the visualized process of design well caters the habits of designers.2. Reasoning process has been divided into two stages. The first-stage reasoning process is designed to rationalize initial data and minimize the workload of the second stage. For the second-stage, the paper discusses the template-classification concept introduced to realize interface matching, as well as the optimization of state-space search, and brings forward the strategy of layered generating-testing.Expert system for modularized design of flow meter is based on Client/Server structure. It realizes the automation of meter design, easy operation and fast response, incorporating the idea of modularized design. After tests and optimization of some relevant parameters, the system gives an excellent problem-solving performance now.
