Fingerprint identification technology is a kind of biometric identification technology. It has been applied widely as a modern technology in biometrics because of the advantages of uniqueness,universality,irreproducibility. Along with the development of science and technology, the applied research of fingerprint identification has become a hot issue while the requirement of safety in mini-equipment is increasing day by day. The traditional fingerprint identificaition system has the disadvantages of portability and cubage.Its algorithm is complicated.It has a large amount of computation and higher performance requirements on the system.All these restrict the transplantation of algorithm to the embedded system and couldn't meet the actual needs.That provides a huge market in the research of Embedded Fingerprint Identification System.For the above, this paper presents a new fingerprint identificaition algorithm based on FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array). Altera's Nios II processor is a configurable soft core processor which can be used by a programmable logic device.The Nios II processor can obtain high performance and low cost,which portfolios with the short development cycle and low-cost Cyclone II FPGA of Altera. Compared with other hard-core systems,Nios II soft-core has particular advantages. Nios II system fully embodies the SOPC(System On a Programmable Chip)thinking. The advantage is of its flexibility and adaptability. This paper uses the properties of Nios II soft-core to design fingerprint identificaition system.It includes the following parts:1. It outlines the development of the fingerprint identificaition and declares the tendency of the embedded system and its new technology.In comparing the characteristics of the prevalent embedded processor at present, we establish the research goal of this topic and decide to design fingerprint identificaition system based on Nios II soft-core processor.2. It designs the hardware and software of fingerprint identificaition system based on Nios II. The system hardware design mainly includes interface circuit of fingerprint gathering senser , periphery circuit and the SOPC system's generation etc. The system software design mainly accomplishes the fingerprint data gathering ,the preprocessing of fingerprint image, the abstraction and match of detail feature point and so on.3. Based on the research of fingerprint image preprocessing identification algorithm existing, the procedure of fingerprint identificaition algorithm which is verified on PC is transplanted to Nios II embedded system. It realizes the system-level design and functional verification. By adopting the Nios II custom instructions and reusing the hardware module,it quickens running rate of the repetitive arithmetic logic in the algorithm and optimizes holistic capability of the system.
