With the rapid development of embedded system and streaming media technology, the multimedia applications based on embedded system such as video on demand, real-time video conference and video phone have become a hot-spot research field. Embedded systems are usually featured by its low power, low cost, small size, reliability, etc.Because of its unique technical characteristics, streaming media transfers the digital media by the form of stream. It allows clients to enjoy VOD service real-time, without waiting for the whole multimedia file to be downloaded, has become one of the most popular multimedia technology.This thesis aims to study the relevant technologies about streaming media and embedded system, and based on ARM9 processor to realize an embedded streaming media player. The hardware platform of the player is planned based on the MC9328MX21 processor, and technologies including embedded Linux, MPEG-4 video decompression and streaming media protocols such as RTSP RTC/RCTP to design the player.This thesis analyzes the functions and the technical characteristics of the embedded multimedia player, selects the hardware and technology and design the overall implementation plan based on the analysis. In the specific design, the thesis builds the system platform on the hardware platform through transplant the BootLoader and the embedded Linux kernel, and adopts the YAFFS to create a root file system; the driver of the matrix keyboard and a solution to eliminate the keyboard jitter are completed at next. A simple MPEG-4 transmission system based on RTSP, RTP/RTCP protocols is designed after studying the related protocols of the streaming media technology. The MPEG-4 stream is decoded through the enhanced multimedia accelerator and Mplayer at last.At the end of the thesis, a summary is presented and features and deficiencies of the embedded multimedia system are introduced. At the same time, some suggestion are forward to improve the instrument.
