With the fast growing of broadband users and applications for internet, online multimedia applications such as IPTV have gradually become important directions for modern telecommunication business. Traditional point-to-point data transfer mode requires large amount of internet bandwidth, which quickly consume up bandwidths of backbone network, and is thus not suitable for handling the ever-growing requirements of multimedia data transfer for massive users. Instead, multicast technology can provide efficient solution for this situation and so it becomes an important research area. This thesis researches on multicast technology for broadband internet's access devices, which are important elements for online multimedia applications such as IPTV. The thesis has mainly researched and implemented the multicast protocol for related access devices such as xDSL and PON, especially implemented related standards for multicast. Details have been investigated for the implementation and execution for multicast protocols. A scheme for distributed multicast implementation and management has been proposed, which effectively improves the performance of multicasting by access devices. The thesis mainly consists of following work:Firstly, the overall system and software and hardware architectures of access devices are introduced. Multicasting for the system and structures and functions of IPTV are briefly explained.Secondly, the design scheme of access devices multicast protocol is investigated in depth. A distributed multicasting implementation and management scheme are proposed and realized. The third layer device multicasting functions, including IGMP and PIM, are researched and developed, including details of data structures and algorithms. Experimental results are also given.Thirdly, the second layer device multicasting functions, such as IGMP Snooping and IGMP Proxy, are researched and implemented. Detailed implementation including data structure and algorithms flowchart are given and are validated by experiment results. In summary, the thesis provides a useful multicast model for broadband access network. The model is suitable for current multicasting business and has practical value based on its multicast user access control. It is proved by experiments that protocols such as IGMP Snooping, IGMP Proxy, and distributed IGMP Proxy are able to support IPTV multicasting effectively.
