Real-time conversational multimedia communication services and applications serve as differentiated services in the 3G wireless network, such as video mail service, IVVR, etc, which improve user experience. While 3G standards body 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) for UMTS networks envision 3G as running entirely over a pure IP-based communications network, the current state of today's IP network suffers severe defects to operate delayed sensitive applications, such as lack of guaranteed QoS, high overhead and bit error rate sensitivity. The telecommunication industry has explored a protocol stack called 3G-324M that enables the delivery of real-time high-bandwidth content, to 3G handsets using traditional circuit-switched channels rather than IP packets. China government has issued three 3G licenses to telecommunication operators in China in 2009, meanwhile both telecommunication operators and service providers are prepared to carry out video project to survive the 3G video competition. It is of prime importance to implement VIG (Video Interconnecting Gateway) function which connects the UMTS core networks with service provider's 3G value-added service platform, and to fulfill the media resource server function which controls real-time video calling and manages media resources. The thesis is aimed to formulate the design principle and implementation issues of 3G-324M Gateway, which fulfills the media process function within the VIG and media resource function within the media resource server. The initial two chapters begin with introducing the concept of telecommunication value-added service and its tendency, and then formulate 3G video conversation relevant standards such as 3G-324M protocol stack and classic signaling process, and ends by introducing the VASRC software system upon which 3G-324M gateway is based. The 3rd chapter makes requirement analysis on 3G-324M gateway. The functional requirements are depicted by UML use case diagrams, use case participants are enumerated and classic operation flow is formulated. Meanwhile, the nonfunctional requirement aspects are also discussed such as efficient resource management, high availability, extensibility. The 4th chapter formulates the design and implementation of 3G-324M gateway. External entities and interfaces of 3G-324M gateway are represented at first. The static model and dynamic model are described respectively and some key design issues related to 3G-324M gateway are provided in the end.In the last part of this paper, the test and practical application are described, and the further improvement upon 3G-324M gateway is given. The test result validates that the technical solution feasibly fulfils the predefined demands.
