IPTV as an important value-added telecom service integrates multiple contents such as voice, video, and data. IP Mulitmedia Subsystem (IMS) is as the core control subsystem layed in next generation network (NGN) service plane. It is very conducive to reuse the IMS functional entities in IPTV, which can be integrated with the telecom services such as audio and video calls, Presence, IM and so on. With the IPTV development in recent years, more and more manufacturers and academic institutes actively participate in the discussions of IPTV related specifications and product development, e.g. ETSITISPAN and ITU-T IPTV Focus. The technical specifications referenced by current IPTV solutions are privately-owned by different major manufacturers. As a result, it is impossible to achieve inter-connection and the large-scale development crossing area boundary. Referencing the IMS-based IPTV technical specifications defined by IPTV ETSI TISPAN and ITU-T, the functional and technical differences between IMS-based and traditional in application servers are discussed. In the thesis, application server includes three functional elements:service access, control and profile. The signal flows of Broadcast, Content on Demand and network-side Personal Video Recorder are analyzed; SIP session state machines are designed. We also design various database tables corresponding to the management of user data and service data in IPTV services. In the implementation part, this thesis focuses on several aspects such as user's profiles and service data management, SIP stack and API, and various service logics. Finally, functional and performance testing is proceeded in the environment which is built on the OpenIMSCore provided by FOKUS as core network, and IPTV soft-client as UE which is developed by our lab.The results show that typical services of IPTV can be implemented by reusing IMS functional entities and basing on SIP protocol. The AS prototype as a value-added server not only can be used for doing the BC, CoD and nPVR services functional demonstration, but also has a good behavior in the performance.
