In recent years, with the increasingly enhancement of China's economic strength, particularly the step-by-step proceeding of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) construction and the accelerated implementation of the "Go Abroad" strategy pushed forward by Chinese government, more and more Chinese enterprises began to show great interests in going out to make direct investments in ASEAN countries. However, what will the future of China-ASEAN bilateral direct investment be like? What are the problems and risks that are restricting the current development of China-ASEAN bilateral direct investment? And what should Chinese government and its enterprises do with these problems to expand their direct investment share in ASEAN countries? These are all questions to be answered imperatively.This thesis is to answer the above questions, after a brief overview of the current bilateral direct investment situation between China and ASEAN countries, through analyzing the significance and possibility to improve China-ASEAN bilateral direct investment from both realistic and theoretical aspects, summing up the problems and risks that are restricting the bilateral direct investment development, and proposing suggestions to increase China's direct investment share in ASEAN countries.This thesis is structured in the following way:Chapter one gives a brief introduction of three terms, including foreign direct investment (FDI), Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), and an general overview of the current bilateral direct investment situation between China and ASEAN countries. In chapter two, combining the present real situation, the author elaborates the two biggest opportunities (including the construction of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and the "Going Abroad" strategy pushed forward by Chinese government) and the significance for China and ASEAN to improve their bilateral direct investment. Chapter three analyzes the possibility for China and ASEAN to improve their bilateral direct investment by using the dominant foreign direct investment theories for developing countries at present.
