Digital Elevation Model(DEM) normally plays a significant role in digital terrainanalyzing. While abstracting the basic terrain factors such as the angle of terrain slope, deviation, roughness and moreover the terrain features like mountaintop, saddle point, ridge and mountain chain are available upon the utilize of signal analyzing tech inDEMs. The rational use of basic terrain factors and features are helpful for the pathsearching, regional planning and other practical problem. This paper focuses on the path search and mountain chain abstraction, and forquestions to path searching methods in grid DEMs which have low search efficiency, unreasonable selection of actual terrain factors. A path searching method based onDijkstra for improving the algorithms inefficiency and difficult to quantitativedescription. Analyzing the technical status of related fields, then designs a reasonablemethod based on Dijkstra. This method can search path in grid DEMs. Theexperimental results show that this new method searching results accord with therequirement of actual path selection. Second, to the question of mountain chainabstraction, this paper integrates the present study, upon the association among themountain peak, saddle point, ridge line and mountain chain, researches and improvedthe solution which combines with ridge classification, mountain peak and saddle pointto direct mountains chain trend. The experimental results show that the mountain chainabstracted by the method is concord to the experimental terrain.
