The railway has an important role in China’s economic and social development as the main artery of the national economy, national critical infrastructure and mass transport. The rapid development of China’s railway over the last decade, railway mileage will reach120000kilometres by2015.How to ensure trains are fast, efficient and comfortable through high precision and high stability of the line in China large-scale railway construction, which is very important. The measurement is the heart and soul to ensure the accurancy. Almost all of the measurements are inseparable from the Total Station in line construction and maintainance stage. However, Total Station can only be measuring in leveling conditions. First, the Total Station set level manually or automatically affects the measurement efficiency. Second,, Total Station needs to reach a basis certain level before setting level, because Total Station’s adjustment range is limited. Finally, the extent of the total station’s setting level is limited. The Total Station has level compensation, but its level compensation ability is limited, setting level is still an important part of the measurement accuracy.This paper briefly describes the basic principles of Total Station measurements, indepth analysis of the Total Station’s free-station and measurement algorithm model in leveling conditions, as well as the main source of error in measurement process. On this basis, the measurement technology and its algorithm models of Total Station free from leveling are proposed firstly. The measurement technology and its algorithm models of Total Station free from leveling includes the free-station and measurement algorithms, in order to achieve the Total Station can be measured in any posture.This paper establishes the numerical free station model and geometric free station model of Total Station free from leveling, research the numerical free station model of multiple solutions, through analysis and comparison of two models, ultimately using geometric free station model to get Total Station’s located site coordinates, and setting up adjustment system to improve the site coordinate precision by the measurement of the excess observations. Secondly, this paper establishes the nonlinear measurement model based on rotation angle and measurement model based on the direction cosine matrix, through analysis and comparison of two models, ultimately using measurement model based on the direction cosine matrix, and setting up adjustment system to improve the model precision by the measurement of the excess observations. Finally, a large number of experiments verify the correctness of the free-station and measurement algorithm model of Total Station free from leveling through different circumstances.The measurement technology of Total Station free from leveling improves the efficiency and the degree of automation of the measurement and has extraordinary significance in engineering applications. In the same time, this model and algorithms model can also be used for many measurement systems other than the railway construction, such as the subsidence monitoring system of the bridge, the shield machine guided system and so on.
