Demographic data is the basis for making decisions by all levels of government, so grasping the spatial distribution of urban population timely and accurately is the key to solve the problems facing the city. In large urban areas, the spatial distribution of the population is complex, and traditional population census data has been unable to meet a variety of needs. Compared with census data, the analysis with high-precision for temporal and spatial distribution of the population in urban areas based on RS and GIS are much closer to the actual situation, has been widely applied to various fields, in particular in solving unexpected situations of the city.In Jing’an District, Shanghai, for example, the method of population density grid is selected for study the spatial distribution of population in a working day. Creating the classification system of urban demographics applied for land use, and getting high precision of land-use types in the study area with high-resolution aerial photographs. According to the law of urban trips and activities, a day is divided into four parts, and each part is using a different model for simulating the spatial distribution of urban population combined with field word. Making a brief analysis of the simulation results, and trading to grid finally, to obtain the temporal and spatial distribution of the population in the study area. The main conclusions are as follows:1. To study the relationship of the spatial distribution of the population in urban and land use. There is the higher gathered degree in commercial and living land type. According to the city population travel features, there is high gathered degree in night for living land type, low in the day, the main population type is elderly and child. As a result, there is different period gathered degrees in different times and land types.2. According to the created classification system of land using type and district of features research, studying different type of distribution situation, which living accounted for than 47%, commercial with to area accounted for than 22%, public management and public service with to area accounted for than 12%, industrial with to area accounted for than 6%, vegetative cover with to area accounted for than 10%, waters with to area accounted for than 1%, idle land area accounted for than 2%.3. It is presented the view of simulation for city population spatio-temporal distribution divided into day and night. The result showed that in night, there are about 90% living area distribution is below 133 persons especially in old public houses, and about 6% is from 134 to 284 in middle-level residential, 3% is from 285 to 547 in high-rise residential, and 1% is above 548 in mega high-rise residential. The population of living land in day time are about 45916 persons, mainly the elder and children.4. It was simulated the daytime population spatial distribution, results show that the 53% working population in commercial land in daytime, which presents that Jing’an District with high population has well-developed business environment, which 45% land used for administration and public services, and only 2% are for industrial use.5. According to the simulation of spatial distribution in day time, using the method of kernel density estimation, getting the spatial distribution of population of NAP-time, which showed that the distribution in the period is around the word center, flowing in a certain range.
