Progress of gene engineering promotes progress of human society. The solutions to these problems of food shortage, scarce resources and pollution in human society depend on the development of gene engineering to a certain extent. An important branch of gene engineering is gene evolution which is a method to generate gene diversity.At present, gene evolution experiments must be operated manually. However, gene variation is not easy to generate in short time. To get gene diversity, a great deal of human resource must be spent in manual experiments. This paper aimed to develop an automated genome evolution machine (AGEM) which can liberate researchers from repetitive and boring work.The main contributions are as follows:An automated genome evolution machine is designed and established basing on the detailed analysis of rapid genome evolution experiment. Devices which cannot be operated by computer are rebuilt, so that the devices can be handled automatically.A novel method to operate BioShake IQ using computer vision technology is proposed. A template matching algorithm for number recognition is developed, which is characterized by high accuracy and good robustness.Software is designed and developed, including PC software and device drivers. Using hybrid programming technology, inter-program communication module is developed.
