3D laser scanning technology is an advanced full-automatic and high-precision three-dimensional scanning technology, it’s a new way of technology acquisition of geographic spatial data. This paper introduced it’s positioning principle, working mode, scanning characteristics, data processing, analysised the shortcomings of traditional topographic surveying and advantages of 3D laser scanning technology for topographic mapping, discussed the 3D laser scanning technology’s unique advantages and broad application prospects. This two application cases using the Leica HDS4400 3D laser scanner for topographic mapping, The main technical process is:control surveying, field data collection, data processing, topographic mapping, First analysis Theoretical precision, then analysis its actual accuracy with detection results, Detection and analysis of these two cases results, the root mean square error of the testing points is ±0.772m and the root mean square error of contour interpolation points is ±0.756m when mapping scale is 1:2000 in gully and hilly region, and the root mean square error of the testing points is ±0.584m and the root mean square error of contour interpolation points is ±0.416m when mapping scale is 1:1000 in alpine region, The actual accuracy was less than the theoretical accuracy, but all meet the specification requirements. Confirm that it can be used in large-scale topographic mapping, directly and conveniently obtain the three-dimensional point cloud data of terrain with high precision, effectively save manpower and material resources, shorten the construction period and improve the efficiency of field work. As survey areas with complex terrain and dangerous area, Detailed point cloud data can be collected without direct contact with object targets, can not only ensure people’s safety and the accuracy of maps, but also improve the efficiency of field work. Some problems for application in practice are proposed for the further research.
