The application of GIS in hydrogeology is a significant aspect of its application, which can greatly promote the progress of information revolution in hydrogeology. The hydrogeological spatial information system, which was developed by GIS, can effectively record, display and manage the hydrogeological data, improve the precision and efficiency of exploration, analysis and evaluation in groundwater resources, and offer the decision basis for the relevant government functional departments. This study developed the hydrogeological spatial information system of Xinzhou city, which relied on the secondary development component ArcEngine9.3, programming software Delphi XE2, database platform ArcSDE9.3and Microsoft SQL server2008. The detail research results are as follows:(1) Selected the development platform and the database platform, determined the system operating environment and the development approach. And based on the collected data and maps, completed the production of other data, which included the geographical information, basic geological information, hydrogeological information, and hydrogeologic thematic images;(2) Conducted the detailed design of database framework, and achieved the construction of the system database, which contained one spatial database and one non-spatial database. The Spatial database, including vector sub-database and grid sub-database, is mainly used for storage and management of the spatial data with the coordinate information, which including the geographic information, basic geological information, hydrogeological information, etc.; The non-spatial database is used for storage and management of the attribute and monitoring data with the format of digit type, character type, time type, documents and pictures, etc.;(3) Developed the hydrogeological spatial information system of Xinzhou city, mainly achieved the functions of the system management, GIS map display, data management, data processing, data query, hydrogeological information display,3D visualization; (4) Verified the reliability and practicability of the hydrogeological spatial information system of Xinzhou city by the hydrogeological data, which proved the system can support the informatization of hydrogeological data, and provide technical assistance for the sustainable exploitation of water resources in Xinzhou city.
