Equivalent linear method is one of the widely used methods in site seismic response analysis. However, studies show that it exists several pitfalls such as: it can not run at some individual discrete points, and the results are unbelievable when soft layer exists. Especially, the calculation results are unreasonable under stronger earthquake motions excitation, dead cycle phenomena may occurs. As a widely used finite element software‐ABAQUS, which is a powerful tool to provides scientific and reasonable design earthquake ground motion parameters for seismic design, can deal with complex boundary conditions, and can also solve the nonlinearity problems reasonably. Studies aimed at site seismic response analysis are carried out based on ABAQUS. The viscous boundary condition and viscous-spring boundary condition were realized in ABAQUS platform. The records of Xiangtang borehole array(3#)site and KiK-net strong-motion seismograph network were also used to validate the seismic response with the ABAQUS software and the RSLEIBM procedures, respectively. The results of above three metheds were compared, and the following conclusions were drawn:1. The research status of site seismic response analysis methods were summarized briefly. The development history of site seismic response analysis methods were summarized briefly. The bedrock ground motion, dynamic constitutive models, artificial boundary conditions and numerical methods were comprehensively classified and summarized.2. Some problems in finite element analysis‐ABAQUS platform were studied. In this paper, the principles of finite element method and ABAQUS finite element software were introduced briefly. Then the characteristics and application range of ABAQUS/Explicit and ABAQUS/Standard were compared, and the elastic-plastic constitutive models in ABAQUS software were analyzed. The viscous boundary condition and viscous-spring boundary condition were realized and verified in ABAQUS platform. The influence of element size on numerical simulation of wave motion was discussed.3. The applicability and reliability of ABAQUS software in the field of site seismic response analysis were verified. The ABAQUS software was tested by strong motion records of Xiangtang array in Tangshan and Japanese KiK-net array. Strong bedrock motions were selected as input ground motions, then ABAQUS software and the RSLEIBM procedures were taken to calculate site seismic response respectively. The results of this study suggest that the finite element softwar ABAQUS can be used in the site seismic response analysis.
