Improving collision safety performance of vehicles has become the key approach to solve traffic safety, which is a major problem endangering China’s public security. As bumper is the effective security components in the process of car collision, and the bumper system research is of significance. Based on this, the experiments and numerical simulation research of a certain type of SUV bumper were carried out, and the following aspects were included in the present paper:1、DHR-9401 drop hammer impact test machine was carried out on the bumper impact experiment, and the dynamic mechanical properties of the bumper, deformation and the change of energy absorption were analyzed when the drop height is 500 mm, 1000 mm, 1500 mm and 2000 mm.2、A numerical model of the bumper was established by using the finite element software ABAQUS, and simulation and analysis of the established numerical model was conducted. The reliability of the numerical simulation was verified by comparing the experimental results with numerical simulation results.3、From the time history curve of the car bumper under drop impact, it can be found that in the impact process, the impact of the bumper throughout oscillation in the process of loading, the short and steady development and uninstall three stages. Under different impact velocity, the overall deformation and a certain amount of residual local deformation occurred for the front bumper, and a different degrees of deformation can be also observed for the rear bumper and beam. The greater the energy of the impact, the more obvious deformation of the bumper, which indicated that plastic deformation has a great influence on the bumper of energy absorption. For a low-speed collision, excellent ductility and impact resistance can be obtained, which can be attributed to the small global deformation and local deformation of the bumper.
