Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) is a kind of persistent organic pollutant (POPs)with the characteristic of environmental stability, strong lipotropism, difficult to metabolismand degradation. It can be accumulated by food web and remote transmission withatmosphere by the process of evaporation-condensing. As an environmental endocrinedisrupter, PBDEs can produce toxic effects to organisms and human. In this study, we used GPC and silica gel purification method to purify and separate thesamples from Bohai Bay. And we determined the PBDEs and its metabolin (OH-PBDEs,MEO-PBDEs) concentrations in the samples by GC-MS. The method detection limit ofPBDEs and its metabolin were0.2-1.2pg/g dw and0.7-3.2pg/g dw, respectively; and therecovery of PBDEs and its metabolin were74%-120%and70%-110%, respectively. The pollution status, distribution and possible causes of PBDEs and its metabolin inanimal samples collected from four intertidal zones of Bohai Bay were analysed. And theenvironmental behavior of these compounds in Bohai Bay were studied preliminarily. Theresults proved that:First, the accumulation of PBDEs in Bohai Bay:In the quantified PBDEs, BDE28was not detected, but BDE47, BDE99, BDE100,BDE153, BDE154and BDE209were detected in all samples. BDE209was the maincompound, followed by BDE47.The PBDEs levels in11animals from Beitang Kou of Bohai Bay followed a order ofcuttlefish (4.00ng/g)> wolffish (2.55ng/g)> octopus (2.50ng/g)> crab (2.32ng/g)> mantisshrimp (2.21ng/g)> Neverita didyma (2.00ng/g)> Platycephalus indicus (1.92ng/g)≈Symechogobius hasta (1.92ng/g)> tonguefish (1.86ng/g)> Prawn (1.69ng/g)>Zooplankter (1.17ng/g). PBDEs level in organism was affected by a variety of factors andexists certain relationship with trophic level, but was not severely increasing with theincreasing of trophic level. We determined PBDEs level in mantis shrimp and Symechogobius hasta from BohaiBay, and found that the pollution distribution of PBDEs mainly focused on Beitang Kou andDagu Kou. The pollution level of PBDEs in Bohai Bay was lower than other countries, buthigher than other regions in China. The PBDEs levels in different tissues of Symechogobius hasta collected from four intertidal zones of Bohai Bay were analysed. We found there was a similar distribution amongBDE47,BDE99,BDE100,BDE153, BDE154and the total content of these compoundswhich is purtenance> gill> muscle, but the distribution of BDE209was different. The levelof∑PBDEs (BDE28,47,99,100,153,154and209) was highest in purtenance. We also analysed Rapana Venosa collected from Beitang Kou and found PBDEs level inmale (1.74ng/g) was higher than that in female (1.38ng/g). The distribution of PBDEs indifferent tissues of Rapana Venosa was followed an order of digestive gland and gonad>other tissues> muscle, but the distribution of BDE209was different in different sex.PBDEs levels in different tissues of fish and Rapana Venosa showed that the purtenance(digestive gland) can be considered as an indicator organ for PBDEs in marine environment. The characteristic and PBDEs level of Cuttlefish made it be considered as a bioindicator ofenvironment.Second, the metabolism of PBDEs in Bohai Bay:In the quantified PBDEs metabolin,6-OH-BDE47,6-OH-BDE99,6-MEO-BDE47and2’-MEO-BDE68were detected in all samples, and the6-MEO-BDE47was dominatedcompound.PBDEs metabolin level in organism from Bohai Bay showed that the pollutiondistribution of PBDEs metabolin mainly focused on Qi Kou. The pollution level of PBDEsmetabolin in Bohai Bay was lower compared with other countries and other regions of China. We analysed the PBDEs metabolin in head and body of tonguefish collected fromBeitang Kou, Dagu Kou and Qi Kou. The result showed that PBDEs metabolin level in headwas higher than that in body. The higher level of OH-PBDEs may be related with themetabolic transformation of PBDEs, ambient PBDEs content and released methylation ofMEO-PBDEs to OH-PBDEs.The study result of accumulation and metabolism of PBDEs in marine animals fromBohai Bay provided data base for further studying the health effect of PBDEs in Bohai Bayecosystem, and technical support for making environmental protection technology of BohaiBay, and scientific proof for China perform Convention of Stockholm.
