The fixed-abrasive lapping polishing is the most effective way to realize ultra precisionmachining of silicon, optical glass and other hard brittle materials. The fixed-abrasive lappingpolishing has many merits such as higher processing efficiency, lower cost, friendly to environment,better process stability, and it has attracted increasing attention. But there are some problems inpractical application of it. This paper is focused on some of these issues and the main jobs are asfollows:1. The component optimization of the fixed-abrasive lapping pad which is applicable to lappingcrystal glass was studied. This paper has studied the influence of the size and content of diamond, thecontent of copper, the size and content of silicon carbide on the abrasion resistance of thefixed-abrasive lapping pad through the single factor experiment. It shows that increasing the size andcontent of diamond can increase the abrasion resistance and material removal rat (MRR) of thefixed-abrasive lapping pad, and in a certain range, improvement of the content of copper and siliconcarbide can also improve the abrasion resistance and MRR of the fixed-abrasive lapping pad, but ifthe copper and silicon are excessively used, the abrasion resistance of the fixed-abrasive lapping padwill reduce. And if the size of diamond and silicon carbide are large, there are some scratches andother defects on the surface of crystal glass after processing. A good component combination of thefixed-abrasive lapping pad has been gotten.2. The structure of mould which is used to make the fixed-abrasive lapping pad has beenoptimized. The influence of the thickness of the fixed-abrasive lapping pad, location of the gate, thenumber of the gate, type of the gate, size of the gate, size of the cold runner and the size of the mainchannel on the shrinkage and deformation of the fixed-abrasive lapping pad through simulation. Andthe shrinkage and deformation of the fixed-abrasive lapping pad has reduced after the optimization ofmould.3. The process performance of the fixed-abrasive lapping pad has been evaluated. The materialremoval rate, service life and the surface quality of crystal after lapping and polishing were selected asthe evaluation indexes. The performance of the electroplating lapping wheel, resin lapping wheel andthe fixed-abrasive lapping pad were compared by experiments. It shows that electroplating lappingwheel has a higher material removal rate which isn’t affected by the type of the crystal glass, and itdoesn’t have the phenomenon of basic glaze and local severe wear problem throughout its life cycle. But the surface quality of the crystal after processing is worse and the service life is shorter. Thesurface quality of crystal glass processed with the fixed-abrasive lapping pad is best. The service lifeof the fixed-abrasive lapping pad is affected by the type of crystal glass.
