The article introduced the development, the role and the main preparation methods ofsizing agent for carbon fiber (CF). The emulsion type, water-soluble type and polymericemulsifier based emulsion type sizing agents were prepared which adopted epoxy resin asfilm former. Scanning electron microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,centrifugal stability test, abrasion test, filament test, stiffness test andinterlaminar shear strength (ILSS) test were used for investigating the effect of sizing agenton the handling characteristics of carbon fiber and the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiberreinforced plastics (CFRP).The emulsion type sizing agent stabilized by OP-10, Tween-80and SDBS was prepared.When the mixture ratio of OP-10, Tween-80and SDBS was65:25:10, the dosage ofemulsifier was9%, the agitation rate was9000r/min, the temperature was70℃and thewater adding rate was1ml/min, the emulsion processed the highest stability. After sizingprocess, the abrasion resistance of sized CF was1992times, the amount of filament was3.2mg and the stiffness was77mm. The ILSS of epoxy composite reinforced by sized CFreached44.51MPa, increasing by30.72%compared with that of the composite reinforced bydesized CF.A water-soluble epoxy resin was synthesized by the reaction between novolac epoxy resin(F-51) and diethanolamine. Then the modified F-51was mixed with polyalkylene glycol allylglycidyl ether (AEPH) as film former of sizing agent. After sizing process, the highest abrasionresistance of sized CF got2051times, the amount of filament was3.2mg and the stiffnesswas65~75mm. The ILSS of epoxy composite reinforced by sized CF reached42.97MPa,increasing by26.19%compared with that of the composite reinforced by desized CF. Thewater-soluble sizing agent possessed better stability than traditional emulsion type sizing ones,because demulsification and sedimentation would not happen during the storage and using.A polymeric emulsifier was synthesized by the addition reaction between ethanolamine,AEPH and epoxy resin E-51. The polymeric emulsifier was used for preparing emulsion typesizing agent. When the dosage of emulsifier was25%, the agitation rate was8500r/min, thetemperature was60℃and the water adding rate was1ml/min, the emulsion processed the highest stability. After sizing process, the abrasion resistance of sized CF got2012times, theamount of filament was2.1mg and the stiffness was74mm. The ILSS of epoxy compositereinforced by sized CF reached52.91MPa, increasing by55.39%compared with that of thecomposite reinforced by desized CF. Besides, the sizing agent stabilized by polymericemulsifier possessed better stability and contributed more to the ILSS than that stabilized bymicromolecule emulsifier.
