Laser welding technology is a highly precise, effective and reliable structureconnection method,which plays a very important role in the manufacturing industry.Damping Steels is widely applied in vibration and noise reduction situations.Laserwelding involves expertise knowledge of the heat transmission, metallurgy andmechanics fields of sciences.Advances in finite element technology enables thefinite element analysis software to be a effective means in the simulation of laserwelding and in analyzing the effects of technological parameters on the shape of themolten pool and the distribution of temperature field to prevent the burning of thedamping layer during laser welding, to predict the result of the experiments and tonarrow the range of the welding parameters used in experiments.First,the basic theories of laser welding and their application are expounded,as well as an in-depth analysis of the status and trends of the development ofnumerical simulation of laser welding in China and abroad. In the meanwhile, animplementing plan for simulation is provided under sufficient consideration ofattributes of Damping Steels and the features of laser welding heat resource.Second,the research path of “the construction of finite element model–theloading of mobile heat source–the analysis of the temperature field–the selectionof technological parameters” was applied.Based on the finite element method, thegeneral-purpose software ANSYS is used for the analysis of numerical simulationof laser welding of Damping Steels.APDL language is used for cyclic loading of theheat source model. According to the features of Damping Steels, a combined heatsource of Gaussian surface sources and evenly distributed gauss body heat sourceswas adopted. The simulation results were used to analyze the effect of laserweldingFinally, experiments of laser deep penetration welding Damping Steels werecarried out.By varying laser welding speeds and defocus, their effects on the laserwelding of Damping Steels were investigated. The proper welding parameters wereselected to perform the laser welding of the volute of the blower.The simulationresults were in good agreement with the experimental results, which verified thecorrectness of the heat source model.
