In order to extend the storage time of chilled meat, biodegradable multilayer films with high barrier property were prepared and used in meat packaging. Multilayer films possess better barrier property and mechanical properties with Poly(L-Lactide)(PLLA) as base material, Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) was sandwiched between two PLLA layers, and its thermostability, barrier property, bonding effect, mechanical properties and packaging performance were evaluated respectively. Experimental results show that multilayer films have good bonding effect, and its barrier property and mechanical properties were enhanced with increasing the thickness of PVA layer.When the weight of the middle PVA layer accounted for20%of the total weight, PLLA/PVA/PLLA(2) shows less PVA content but better barrier property. Compared with pure PLLA layer, when the weight of the middle PVA layer accounted for20%of the total weight, the OTR values of PLLA/PVA/PLLA(2) was reduce by273times. Although Oxygen barrier property reduced with rising the temperature or the humidity, PLLA/PVA/PLLA(2) shows better barrier property than pure PLLA layer under high temperature and high humidity.PLLA/PVA/PLLA(2) shows better mechanical properties than pure PLLA layer. The tensile strength increased by9%, Elongation at break increased by50%, Young’s modulus increased by10%.In the chilled meat packaging test, packaging characteristics of three kinds of packaging material (PLLA/PVA/PLLA(2), PA/PE, PE fresh-keeping film)were compared. The results show that the chilled meat is not bad after23days storage which was packaged vacuum with PLLA/PVA/PLLA multilayer film and is similar to chilled meat packaged vacuum with PA/PE, but the PE fresh-keeping film packaged chilled meat went bad much earlier.
