Uranium hydrometallurgy facilities have accumulated a large amount of uraniumwaste rock and tailings after decommission, which bring the radiation hazards to theenvironment and the public. In China, due to backward technology and imperfectioninstitution, research on uranium tailings safety protection distance is not yet mature.Provisions of the standard GB23727-2009: distance of uranium tailings boundaryfrom residential areas shall not be less than800meters, unless a mountain barrierand taking protective measures, the distance can be an appropriate reduction. Thus,the safety protection distance has complexity and flexibility, if in strict accordancewith the800m standards to determine the distance, some project cost is relativelylarge. This paper takes Hunan province graduate education innovation baseconstruction "decommissioning of uranium tailings impoundment technologycenter" project, based on the radon monitoring of uranium tailings surroundingthe uranium tailings surrounding radon diffusion mechanism was studied, and thesafety protection distance was discussed, the specific contents are as follows:(1)The measurement method of radon uranium tailings surrounding was made,which introduced the monitoring instruments, method,distribution, types, time,instrument monitoring cycle, instrument response time,cycles and specific monitoringsteps, the radon exhalation rate of uranium tailings dam and the surface wereacquired,and two groups radon concentration in April and September weremonitored, the date was analyzed, from the two aspects of humidity and pressure, thecauses which lead to differences radon concentration between April and Septemberwere analyzed.(2)The influence factors on the uranium tailings safety protection distancewere put forward. Based on the actual situation of uranium tailings surrounding, thispaper mainly considered from intensity, source,population, terrain, weather and thedose limit, Based on qualitative and quantitative analysis, focusing on analysis ofsafety protection distance under the direction of NE, NW, SE according to1mSv/a,0.5mSv/a dose limit value, the safety protection distance of the whole tailings surrounding was determined. The safety protection distance of main download is600m, the safety protection distance of the dominant downwind is500m, the otherdirections are400m, and the significance of optimizing safety protection distance isanalyzed.
