At present, similarity theory is mainly aiming at components, but for the complex and large real systems in practice, similarity theory is greatly limited. To solve this problem, a research method of similar simulation was proposed in this paper which combined similarity theory with system theory. The main research contents and results read as follows:Firstly, similarity theory is mainly aiming at components at present, and similarity nature could be divided into two parts:functional similarity and structural similarity. Functional similarity criterion and structural similarity criterion were derived by using dimensional analysis method. Then a series of basic mechanical components were taken for example to verify the feasibility and superiority of this method. The method put forward in this paper can be applied to model test design and engineering test,etc. under different similar requirements.Secondly, for the similar problem of complex system, functional similarity and structural similarity were applied to complex system and the overall system-subsystem-components similarity relation were establish. And the similarity criterion of complex system were established based on functional and structural similarity. The key of this similarity criterion is the similarity matrix and the prototype system is similar to model system only if the two corresponding similarity matrices are equal. The criterion remedied the defect of the three similarity theorem and expanded the similarity theory into large complex systems. At last, this paper verified the feasibility and superiority of this method through analysis of examples.Finally, Large forging manipulator, which is a typical large complex system was taken for an example to apply the method put forward. The similarity criterion of complex system was established under different similar requirements to simulate the actual situation. After the contrastive analysis, this method could be applied to complex system and used in model design under different similar requirements.
