Polyacrylonitrile(PAN) precursors were modified with potassium permanganate(KMnO4), aiming to improving the molecular and morphology structures and mechanical performance of PAN fibers and resultant carbon fibers. Comparative studied on the thermo-chemical reactions of modified and unmodified fibers during the preparation of resultant carbon fibers were performed, by using convention test, FT-IR, SEM, and DSC, to analyze the relationship of thermo-chenmical reations and structures. Results indicated that the variety in thermo-chemical reactions of modified fibers had close relationships with theirs transformation of structure, and the tensile strength of resultant carbon fibers increased by30%. And the strain to failure of carbon fibers reached2.2%while the tensile strength was4.1GPa. |
