The factors which affect the stability of the opaque glasses colored by CdS/Seand preparation process were studied. The glasses were colored by the addition ofmixed colorant CdS、Se based on Na2O-ZnO-SiO2phosphate glass system. Analysisthe phase and microstructure of the specimen with XRD、SEM. Investigate the effectof composition on the physical and chemical properties of the glasses by means ofthermal expansion analysis、strength analysis、water resistance analysis. The effects ofcolorant content and ratio and heat-treatment condition on the color of specimen werestudied. The mechanism and preferential content of ZnO、the content and ratio ofalkali oxide、the addition amount of P2O5emulsion、the atmosphere of the furnace onthe color performance were also be investigated. Thus provide theoretical guidance tothe manufacture of opaque glass colored by CdS/Se in an effort to produce red seriesopaque glass characterized by uniform color、favourable physical and chemicalproperties. The result show that red series opaque glass characterized by uniform color、favourable physical and chemical properties was obtained in the case of the additionof Se/CdS is0.4wt%1.8wt%respectively. With the variation of the ratio of CdS/Se,color of the glass specimen changed accordingly. The amount of the CdS,CdSecrystalline phase were increased with the increase of colorant amount which leads tothe improvement of the physical and chemical properties. The colorant CdS/Se can tosome degree induce uniform phase separation in glass. The role of ZnO is to stabilizethe colorant so as to prevent the evaporation of Se/S. ZnO is an indispensableingredient in the manufacture of colored opaque glass and the generally addition ofZnO is16wt%. ZnO was employed as network former in the present work and canimproved the physical and chemical properties. With the increase amount of ZnO,thecolorant which was stabilize by ZnO increased accordingly, thus the colorant amountremained in the glass increased. The evaporation of the colorant reduced effectively when using processes suchas the preheat treatment of CdS/Se with ZnO、high-temperature feed measure. Withthe variation of time and temperature of the heat treatment, the color of glass willchange correspondingly. When the temperature become higher, the time become longer, then the color of the glass become deeper. The preferential time andtemperature is2h and600℃respectively. To obtain acceptable color, the atmosphereof the furnace must be maintained as weakly reducing atmospheres. In the presentwork,Zn powder was employed as a reductant and the preferential content is1wt%.Strong oxidizing atmosphere or a strong reducing atmosphere will seriously affect thecolor performance. In order to decrease the melting point and reduce the lose of thecolorant,a large amount of alkali oxide was added to the composition. Base on theprinciple of mixed alkali effect,Na2O、K2O was used as fluxing agent and the bestratio of the Na2O、K2O is1.2.
