SnSb intermetallic was synthesized in aqueous solution and organic solvent usingSnCl2H2O, SbCl3as metal precursors, NaBH4, Zn as reducing agent, respectively. TheXRD, SEM, EDS, particle analyzer and BET were used to characterize the phase, morphology, particle size and pore structure of SnSb intermetallic. The variety of reduction、solvation power and polarity as well as viscosity which have an effect on the morphology、particles diameter and BET surface area of obtained SnSb intermetallic. The SnSb alloymade by carefully reductive co-precipitation in NaBH4in aqueous was “brick-like”. Theparticle sizes was1.82μm, and the BET surface area was27.86m2·g-1. The material madeby Zn reduction in glycol was “feather-like”. The particle sizes was0.04μm, and the BETsurface area was30.25m2·g-1.The experiments of desulfurization for Saudi crude oil were carried out using SnSbintermetallic prepared by chemical precipitation. Several parameters were studied. Theresults showed that when the reaction time was12h、proportion of emulsified oil was3:1、quantities of added SnSb alloy was25:1、the loading voltage was20V,the desulfurizationrate of Saudi crude oil reached24.5%. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis results showedthat the reactive sulfur compounds such as thiols、thioethers and disulfides in gasoline anddiesel fraction has been removed from crude oil. The gas chromatography-massspectrometry (GC-MS) results showed that benzonaphthothiophenes andbenzo-bis-benzothiophenes in saturates and aromatics could also been removed by SnSbintermetallics. After thoroughly toluene solvent washing of the residual of intermetallic powder, sulfur being adsorbed on the surface of SnSb intermetallics was found by energydispersive spectrometer (EDS). The mechanism of SnSb inermetallics desulfurization wasdestructive adsorption. The low sulfur molecules were removed during the attachment bythe cleavage of sulfur compounds at α or β bond by vibrational or retational force. Theheavier sulfur compounds were attached on the defective crystalline sites of powders’surface. It is necessary to carry out regeneration experiments of SnSb intermetallics because itlost desulfurization activity after single pass. Three cleaning methods for restoring SnSbintermetallics desulfurization activity were studied. It was found that methylbenzenewashing was the most appropriate method.
