YAG laser-double wire pulse MIG hybrid welding is based on the composition oflaser welding and double wire welding method, and developed into a new type ofwelding processing technology. At present, research on it mainly concentrated in thestudy and numerical modeling on the welding process of laser-single arc hybridwelding method both at home and abroad, while research on laser-double wire pulseMIG/MAG welding process is rarely seen.In this paper, YAG laser-double wire pulse MIG hybrid welding system has beenestablished, a set of tests have been researched with the method of synchronouscurrent and voltage signals, as well as high-speed camera pictures. The research hasshown that, under the condition of the same processing parameters, different ways thetwo wires were arranged in, which are tandem and parallel, would have a significantinfluence on welding process. The frequency of short circuit is a key factor to evaluatethe stability of a welding process. The influence of various welding parameters to the frequency of short circuit hasbeen tested and analyzed based on the double wire pulse MIG welding system, divided into two aspects due to the two wire arrangement ways. Correspondingly, theinfluence of laser to the frequency of short circuit and weld shape has been researchedbased on the laser-double wire pulse MIG welding system. When welding speed is increased, the frequency of short circuit tends to decreasein both ways of wire arrangement. With the distance between two wires graduallyincreasing from0mm to11mm, under tandem wire arrangement, the frequency ofshort circuit first declines, then rises, and then falls again. When the distance is3mm,optimum welding process can be obtained and there is no short circuit phenomenon. While under parallel arrangement way, there is no short circuit phenomenon at alldistances. With the increase of welding torch angle, under tandem wire arrangement, the frequency of short circuit first declines, then rises, the minimum is reached whenthe torch angle is60degree. While under parallel arrangement way, there is no shortcircuit phenomenon at all degrees. The frequency of short circuit tends to increase inboth ways of wire arrangement as the wire feeding speed increases. With the increaseof preset value of welding machine, under tandem wire arrangement, the frequency ofshort circuit first declines, then rises, and then falls again. While under parallel arrangement way, there is no short circuit phenomenon at all preset values.Weld pool is easier to spread around, and the height of the pool and wireextension can be reduced when laser is used, thus short circuit frequency is reduced.Although metal transfer frequency is reduced by laser, the distance between the wireend and the pool is increased significantly, the combination result is a reduced shortcircuit frequency under any welding parameters. The weld depth and width bothincrease in two wire arrangement ways when laser is worked. In general, weld iswider and shallower when arranged in parallel than that in tandem arrangement.
