Ceramic corundum abrasive is a new type of abrasive which has a series ofperfect properties such as small grain size, high hardness, strong cutting ability,self-sharping and long service life, etc. In recent years, the ceramic corundumabrasive has become a new research hotspot of grinding field. The cera mic corundumabrasive was synthesized by sol-gel method. Firstly, the microstructure and propertiesof abrasive with BaO-B2O3-SiO2were investigated in the study. Then MgO, CuO andTiO2were introduced into ceramic corundum abrasive with BaO-B2O3-SiO2additivein two forms: one was MgO, CuO and TiO2were introduced in to abrasiverespectively and the other was the combination of them. And their influence on themicrostructure and properties of abrasive were discussed. Finally the effects ofsintering process on microstructure and properties were also researched. In this study, the effects of different additive systems, molar ratio and sinteringmethod on the single particle compressive strength, temperature of phasetransformation and microstructure of corundum abrasives were systematicallyexplored by single particle compressive strength tester, X-ray diffractometer, hightemperature differential thermal-thermogravimetric analyzer and scanning electronmicroscope. The results proved that the BaO-B2O3-SiO2could effectively reduce thesintering temperature of ceramic corundum abrasives. In the system ofBaO-B2O3-SiO2additive, when the total content of the additive was1.5wt.%and theBaO: B2O3was8:12:80, the single particle compressive strength of abrasive reachedthe highest value,42.38N and the microstructure was uniform, sintering at1400℃for0.5h. Adding MgO, CuO and TiO2respectively had no obvious effects on theperformance improvement of abrasive. But when MgO-TiO2additive (in the molarratio of1:1) was added into abrasive, the highest single particle compressive strengthof the abrasives was obviously increased to54.75N. Compared with traditionalsintering process, using two-step sintering method of alumina, the abrasive grain sizewas significantly reduced. When the sintering schedule was1350℃-1200℃for5h,the abrasive grain size was about200nm with almost no abnormal grain growth and the microstructure was more uniform.
