At present, domestic and foreign research related to BTEX mainly focused on air, soil, sediment and water, and the study of BTEX in seawater is less. Although theresearch on the traceability technology of BTEX is rarely reported, identification andtraceability technology of multiple characteristic fingerprints based on the analysis ofchemical composition has been widely used. The same chemicals because of thedifference of sources, raw materials and production process cause differentcharacteristics of the types of trace feature elements and content. Taking this as astarting point, the main research contents as follows:Firstly, the method used to detect BTEX in seawater was optimized on theexperimental conditions and parameters. HS-GC/MS and HS-SPME-GC/MS wereestablished for the determination of trace BTEX in seawater. Through analysis of thepractical seawater samples, the result was satisfactory. Under the optimized conditions, the two methods’ limits of detection (S/N=3) were0.057~0.099μg/L and0.011~0.043μg/L respective. The recoveries at the three spiked levels of0.16μg/L,1.6μg/L and16μg/L ranged from81.25~103.73%and80.00%~116.56%respective. Obviously,HS-SPME-GC/MS has a lower detection limit and high sensitivity. It’s more suitablefor the determination of trace BTEX in water. So, HS-SPME-GC/MS was selected forthe research of BTEX’s traceability.Secondly, with toluene as an example, the simulation of BTEX’s leakage in the seawas done outdoor. HS-SPME-GC/MS and LLE-GC/MS were adopted to test the tracecomponents of toluene’s original and weathered samples, and some diagnostic ratioswere screened. The comparison of the diagnostic ratios shows that, both methods can completely identify the weathering samples from different manufacturers. Incomparison, the former method is more suitable for the less leakage case, whereas thelatter one is superior when the water surface is covered with more toluene. The effectwould be greater if the two methods were used integratedly.Through the above research, typical benzene series’ traceable technology wasestablished based on the diagnostic ratios of trace components, which providesmethodological support and theoretical basis for marine monitoring and lawenforcement in the process of accident emergency treatment and responsibilityinvestigation.
