A new sand fixing agent, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) grafting acrylics, has been synthesized by means of emulsion graft copolymerization. In this paper, using acrylate (MA) and vinyl acetate (VAc) as the main monomers, dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as the emulsifier, ammonium persulfate as initiator, product is synthesized into water-soluble emulsion under water solvent. This kind of sand fixing agent can not only be used for sand dune, slope, docks, mines and construction sites, but also be combined with biological sand fixation and become a new synthesis method of sand fixation. This paper mainly explored the monomer ratio, the dosage of SDBS, APS and the HPMC, as well as polymerization temperature on the properties of the emulsion. Combined with the viscosity of the sand fixing agent, compression, strength, liquidity, stability and product appearance, when the monomer ratio was3:5, the amount of SDBS, APS, HPMC was4.5%,0.8%,20%and the temperature was60℃, we could get the sand fixing agent that emulsion had good properties and application performance, could meet the needs of the actual sand fixation. This paper analyzed the properties of the sand fixing agent, including solid content determination of sand fixing agent, viscosity test, infrared spectrum analysis (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TG), transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experimental results showed that the sand fixing agent solid content is9.75%; the viscosity of the sand fixing agent emulsion increased with the increase of solid content and decreased with the increase of temperature, the viscosity decreased after20days, but still meet the actual needs; FTIR analysis explained that graft copolymer had not only all the characteristic absorption peaks of pure HPMC, but also a new functional group of the carbonyl group (C=O) and monomers reacted completely. XRD diffraction analysis showed the reaction happened on the surface of HPMC and amorphous area; SEM analysis showed the surface of HPMC changed smooth to coarse before and after grafting; TGA result shows that the sand-fixing agent owns good thermal stability in the range of room temperature to240℃. TEM results showed that the globules were300-500nm in diameter, after20days, the emulsion owned good stability. This paper analyzed the application performances of the surface curing effect, water absorption, water retention, compressive strength, water resistance, frost resistance, wind erosion and degradation. The results showed that this new sand fixing agent had good application performance which satisfied the actual requirements. This paper chose the HPMC as raw materials, not only enriched the uses of HPMC, but also provided theoretical data for further study on the new sand fixing agent. It had a great development value and application value.
