Water-soluble latex was prepared from acrylate monomers by latexpolymerization. The latex used as sand fixing and dust suppressant wassynthesized with vinyl acetate (VAc), and methyl acrylate(MA). Acrylic acid(AA) and2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfuric acid (AMPS) were used asfunctional monomers. Ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as initiator.Sodium lauryl benzenesulfate (SDBS) and OP-10were used as emulsifiers.The sand fixing and dust suppressant not only can be used in mineral area,desert, road construction and other aspects, but also can be used with plantsand-fixing to reach the effect of preventing soil and water loss and protectingenvironment.Synthesis conditions were discussed. The influence of polymerizationtemperature, the mass ratio of two kinds of monomers, the amount of functional monomer and initiator, the amount and ratio of emulsifiers werestudied. The results showed that the latex has good performance and havesuitable viscosity and thermal stability when the mass ratio of monomers was5:3, the amount of AMPS is1.5%, the amount of initiatorAPS is0.8%, theamount of total emulsifier is6%(mass ratio of SDBS and OP-10is1:2).The performance of the sand-fixing and dust suppressant wascharacterize. Solid content, viscosity,IR analysis, TG, molecular weight, TEMand SEM analysis were tested. The results were showed that:(1) the solidcontent was44.68%;(2) the viscosity of sand-fixing and dust suppressantchanged little at different temperatures and different storage time, the thermalstability was good;(3) IR spectrum proved that monomers have beencompletely reacted basically.(4) Different thermal gravimetric analysis wascharacterized that the sand-fixing and dust suppressant has good thermalstability between0℃and230℃.(5) The mass average of molecular weight is288116, and the polydispersity is6.753754, the purity of copolymer wasproved;(6) TEM was used to characterize the particle size. The latex particlediameter was about350nm. The boundaries of latex particle were particularlyclear;(7) The placing stability was observed by SEM.The application performance of the sand-fixing and dust suppressant wascharacterized, including effect of solidification, water resistance, wind erosionresistance, water retention, comprehensive strength, temperature resistance,water permeability. The results showed that the sand-fixing and dust suppressant has a good fixing performance.Theoretical data was provided by the results of this research for thefurther research of sand-fixing and dust suppressant. The sand-fixing and dustsuppressant used in particle will produce good economical and social benefits.
