Lakes and reservoirs are important water source for the arid regions. With strengthening the westerndevelopment strategy of China in the21s century, the population increased rapidly, and theindustrialization and agriculture promoted in the Xinjiang.Serious water crises has been formed by a greatdeal of pollutant being emit from sewage and industrial and agricultural wastwater. In this paper, thecurrent situation and trend of water quality of the main lakes and reservoirs in northern Xinjiang aredetected through analysis of the water quality datas in the period of2012.It is significance in furtherresearching the enviormental evolution of lakes and reservoirs in Xinjiang. This is also the precondition forprotecting natural resources and putting them torational/sustainable use.(1)The current situation of the main lakes and reservoirs in northern Xinjiang. The single factor index method and synthesized index method are used to evalute the current situationof water quality. The results show that, amoung the evaluated twelve lakes and reservoirs, eight lakes andreservoirs are polluted that can’t meet the level requirement of water quality protection target, exceptTianchi, Sailimu Lake and Wulabo Reservoir. Water quality of Sailimu Lake is so clean that meet therequirements of ecological function, which reachs water quality standard I grade. Water quality of Tianchiand Jiahezi Reservoir can meet the requirements of ecological and irrigational function with water qualitystandard Ш grade. TP is the limiting factors for the Sailimu Lake, Tianchi and Jiahezi Reservoir. Yuejinand Wulabo Reservoir are clean with water quality standard Ⅴgrade, TP and TN are the mainly exceedingwater qualities standard index, repectively. The water quality of Fuhai Reservoir is light polluted withwater quality standard IV grade. TP is the mainly exceeding water qualities standard index. The waterquality of Chaiwopu Lake reaches severly pollution. The mainly exceeding water qualities standardindexes are CODMn, COD, TP, TN and F, that COD and F are the limiting factors. The water quality ofWulungu Lake and Jili Lake reaches the light and middle grade pollution, respectively. The mainlyexceeding water qualities standard indexes are F and COD, which are the limiting factors. Aibi Lake hasbeen severely polluted, which the polluted indexes include DO, CODMn, COD, NH3-N. CODMnand CODare the limiting factors. In Mengjin and Moguhu Reservoir, many indexes of the water have surpassed thefive kinds standards of the national groundwater environmental quality, such as COD, F, NH3-N, TP, whichbelongs to the five bad water quality.(2)The nutrition situation of the main lakes and reservoirs in northern Xinjiang. The way of enduing with score is used to valuate the nutrition situation. The results show that4lakesand reservoirs are eutrophication among the evaluated12lakes and reservoirs, except Sailimu Lake andTianchi Lake. Menjin Reservoir shows light nutrient status in flood period. The moderate eutrophicationstatus appear in three periods of Chaiwopu Lake and Moguhu Reservoir, the annual mean concentration ofAibi Lake, non-flood period and the annual mean concentration of Mengjin Reservoir. The other Lakes andReservoirs show a mesotrophy nutrient status.(3)Trend of water quality of the main lakes and reservoirs in northern Xinjiang. The method of Kendall test is used to analyze of the trend of water quality. The results show that eachof factors haven’t significant trend in the Wulungu Lake and Fuhai Reservoir, but other lakes and reservoirs have a downward trend. Salinity increases in Chaiwopu Lake, which shows the aggravated salt pollution.CODMn increases in Chaiwopu Lake, NH3-N increases in Sailimu Lake, Jili Lake, Yuejin Reservoir, thatshow the aggravated non-point pollution and aggravated organic pollution. Volatile phenols decreasessignificantly in Moguhu Reservoir, but other lakes and reservoirs haven’t significant trend. The results ofvolatile phenols show mose of lakes and reservoirs haven’t yet been polluted by the poisonous pollutantsproduced in the production process of many kinds of industry. Cadmium hasn’t significant trend in detectedlakes and reservoirs, that show all the detected lakes and reservoirs havn’t yet been polluted by heavymetal.
