Calcium zirconate has been researched and used in a wide range of applicationsas a new structural and functional material in terms of functional ceramics andrefractories. The primary reasons are: the high melting point, chemical stability, highmechanical strength, low coefficient of thermal expansion, resistance to alkalinestrong ability slag erosion and unique electrical performance. In order to explore theeffect of different raw materials, additives alumina and different ratio of raw materialson the synthesis of phase composition, microstructure and density, the hightemperature solid state reaction method was performed on calcium zirconate materials.The composition and microstructure of structural changes using homemade calciumzirconate crucible melting zirconium calcium material and steel samples have beenstudied, too. In this paper, using the X-ray diffraction to analyze the phasecomposition of synthetic materials; and by the calculation of a synthetic calciumzirconate lattice constant of the main phase, indicated the defects on the material;exploiting SEM analysis tools to observe the microstructure of the sample;additionally, sintering properties of the sample was indirectly analyzed by detectingbulk density and porosity of the material. The results showed that: the calciumzirconate synthesized from calcium carbonate and monoclinic zirconia material havethe highest volume density and the lowest porosity. When the additive amount of thealumina molar percentages is2~3%, it could promote sintering calcium zirconate andincrease the density of the material; while the ratio of calcium to zirconia was1.1:1,we may obtained calcium zirconate with the best overall performance. Although theinteraction with the carbon steel materials and calcium zirconate couldn’t carrydesulfurization and dephosphorization through, it had good resistance to spallingperformance and strong corrosion resistance. What’s more, calcium zirconate wasfound to absorb alumina inclusions in molten steel without adding oxygen.
