POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) are Organic chemical pollutants with high biotoxicity, high bioaccumulation and semi volatile. They possess the ability of long-range transport and the enduring state of being. Besides, it is difficult to biodegrade them either physically or chemically. As a result, the environment and the health condition of human beings are in danger. Nowadays, the pollution status of POPs in numerous media has become a hot research area. In order to know the residue of POPs in China and to provide ancillary information for Environmental Management Authorities, it has a practical meaning to carry out the nationwide investigation of POPs in environmental media. There are two parts in the experiment. One is the investigation on the distribution of POPs in China, the other is the analysis of the characteristics of typical sediment on the surfaces of valleys. For the first part:Nationally, due to the history of pesticide producing and using, the residue of organochlorine pesticides(DDTs and HCHs) are higher in places like Shandong, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian, Hebei, Tianjin, and Liaoning, where the development of agriculture developed earlier or places where pillar industry is dependent on peasants. The pollution in middle areas is less than in southern coastal areas, followed by that in northeastern areas. As for PCDD/Fs and PCBs, the concentration is much higher in coastal areas in northern, eastern and southern China. In these economically developed areas, industries are based on burning, coking, chemical engineering and so on. Those industries are main sources of PCDD/Fs and PCBs. In addition, the general trend is that the amount of PCDD/Fs and PCBs is bigger in the east than that in the west. Consequently, the pollution of POPs in China is closely related with the economical development, historical distribution of industry and agriculture, and the industrial structure of each area.Analysis on the Characteristics of typical Watershed pollution is is not only a supplement for above-mentioned POPs national survey, but also a improvement to typical Watershed POPs pollution status. The paper analyses pollution level and distribution characteristics for (PCDD/Fs) and (PCBs) in typical Watershed by the means of (HRGC-HRMS) and (GC-LRMS).The results for PCDD/Fs and PCBs in Surface Sediments of the middle Reaches of the Changjiang and Huanghe River shows that concentration of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs ranges from6.26to84.85pg/g and2.69to36.3pg/g, concentration of TEQ ranges from0.09to0.45pgWHO-TEQ/g and0.002to0.036pgWHO-TEQ/g in the deposit of Changjiang; that concentration of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs ranges from2.03to19.81pg/g and1.46to33.8pg/g, concentration of TEQ ranges from0.083to0.553pgWHO-TEQ/g and0.001to0.043pgWHO-TEQ/g in the deposit of Huanghe.Because of the Industrial development of the sampling sites for Changjiang River were setted from Yiyang to Jinzhou region in Hubei province is later than Shanghai,Jiangsu and Guangdong, the influence for PCDD/Fs and PCBs in the deposit is limited and amount of residue is small. Therefore the conclusion this area is not monitoring and management key areas is obtained and data support for POPs environmental background is provided in our country.
