TiC-based cermets materials was widely used in cutting fields due to there highstrength and hardness, wear corruption and high temperature resistance, good chemicalstability and wear resistance. However, the obvious weakness of the TiC-based cermetsmaterials was brittleness, therefore,we used to add some metal materials to improve thetenacity of TiC. In this study,Through add some Mo and La2O3into TiC-based cermetsto study the effect of Mo and La2O3addition on mechanical property and cuttingperformance. The procedures was three steps as follow:Firstly, TiC-based cermets with different Mo additions was prepared by powdermetallurgy method. The microstructure and cross section images of the samples werecharacterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical performancewas tested based on the research of density, bending strength and hardness experiments.Secondly, On the basis of this conclusion, By add different content of La2O3to study theeffect of La2O3additions on the density, bending strength and hardness of TiC-basedcermets. Finally, By cutting normalized45#steel, cutting performance with the effect ofdifferent La2O3content in TiC-based cermets was studied. The results showed that TiC-based cermets have good density and bending strengthwith the increase of the content of Mo. As the content on8%,TiC-based cermets showthe better comprehensive mechanical properties. La2O3additions not only refinement ofgrains in some extent, but also improved the strength and hardness of TiC-basedcermets by the way of dispersion strengthened. The best component of TiC-basedcermets with the comprehensive properties was1%La2O3additions. Through cuttingexperiment, the cutting tools wearing mechanism was studied. The results showed thatadded1%La2O3TiC-based cermets have the best cutting performance and have alonger working durability than YT15tools.
