In this paper, a series of polymer/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)composites were prepared via masterbatch blending method, direct blendingmethod, and grafting copolymerization method. The results are shown asfollows.High density polyethylene (HDPE)/styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene blockcopolymer (SEBS)/octaisobutyl silsesquioxane (oib-POSS) composites wereprepared via masterbatch blending method and direct blending method. Theresults show that oib-POSS can improve the thermal stability of HDPE/SEBSblends, while the adding way of oib-POSS has little effect on the thermalstability of HDPE/SEBS blends. Moreover, the mechanical properties ofHDPE/SEBS/oib-POSS composites via masterbatch blending method are muchbetter than those of HDPE/SEBS blends and HDPE/SEBS/oib-POSS compositesvia direct blending. However, the adding way of oib-POSS and oib-POSScontent has little effect on the crystallization temperature and melting point ofHDPE.Polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM)/oib-POSScomposites were prepared via masterbatch blending method and direct blendingmethod. The results show that the mechanical properties, thermal stability andVicat softening point of PP/EPDM/oib-POSS composites via masterbatchblending are superior to those of PP/EPDM/oib-POSS composites via directblending. oib-POSS can induce the formation of β crystal of PP, and masterbatchblending method can further improve the fraction of β crystal of PP.Poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC)/chlorinated polyethylene (CPE)/2,3glycidyloxypropylpolyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (EP-POSS) composites were prepared viamasterbatch blending method and direct blending method. The results show thatthe mechanical properties, thermal stability, Shao A hardness, processing performanceand Vicat softening point of PVC/CPE/EP-POSS composites via masterbatch blendingare better than those of PVC/CPE/EP-POSS composites via direct blending.Polystyrene (PS) was grafted onto the surfaces of nano EP-POSS particles viareversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The resultingproduct, POSS-g-PS, was used to modify acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer(ABS) via melt blending. The results show that the mechanical properties, processing performance, Shao A hardness and thermal stability of ABS/POSS-g-PS compositeswere significantly superior to those of ABS/EP-POSS composites.
