HIPS is widely used as the various type of the covered material, but the strength of HIPS is not good. According to the problem, kenaf fiber(KF) was introduced in HIPS resin to prepare composites, kenaf can reinforce HIPS and the composites have a certain of biodegradation.HIPS/KF composite was prepared by HIPS resin and KF, the tensile strengh of HIPS/KF was most improved when the length of fiber was20mm and the content of fiber was20%. When the fiber content was50%, the tensile strength of the composite declined slightly, but the bending strength and bending modulus were also improved compared to HIPS.In order to increase the compatibility between HIPS and kenaf fiber, KF was chemical modified by benzylation, the grating rate of the modified fiber (BKF) was174%by the orthogonal test. The microstructure of BKF changed and the crystallinity reduced, the modified fiber had certain flame retardancy. In addition, another methods of modification, alkali treatment, coupling agent treatment, coupling agent assisted by microwave treatment were also used to modify which were denoted NKF, KKF, WKF. According to the water absorpotion test, it was found that the water absorption of BKF is minimum of all these fiber.The composites (HIPS/NKF, HIPS/KKF, HIPS/WKF) were prapared by HIPS and the modified fiber with50%fiber content. The mechanical properties, the flow properties and the microstructure of the composites were compared. The results showed that after the fiber was modified, the compatibility of the resin and fiber was improved obviously. The strengh of the HIPS/BKF composite was most improved among all the composites, but the toughness declined compared with HIPS/WKF.Further to this two kinds of composites for rheological experiments, it was found that the viscosity to temperature of HIPS/BKF composite is more sensitive, the flow properties of the composite could be control by adjusting the temperature.In order to improve the thoughness of HIPS/BKF composite, nano SiO2was modified and added into the composite. The influence of the mano particle to mechanical properties of the composites was discussed. The results showed that nano SiO2could improve the impact toughness of HIPS/BKF significantly and make further improvement of the strength.The SiO2/HIPS/BKF composite had a optimal mechanical performance when the dosage of nano SiO2was3%.
